The latest IO500 ranking—a suite of benchmarks for storage performance published by the IO500 Foundation on June 24,—shows the Peng Cheng Cloud Brain III system, powered by Huawei OceanStor A800 storage, claiming the top spot. The system achieved an IO500 score 2.8 times higher than the previous record, setting a new benchmark.
The IO500 is regarded as the benchmarking standard for measuring storage performance in supercomputing and AI computing scenarios. Using a complex hybrid workload model, it comprehensively evaluates the bandwidth and metadata performance of storage systems under the extreme demands of highly concurrent, large-scale cluster environments. A subset of the IO500 rankings Full List, the Research List evaluates and tests the performance limits of an entire storage system. This requires the coordinated operation of hundreds—even thousands—of compute and storage nodes, pushing combined hardware and software solutions close to their theoretical performance peak.
As the storage foundation behind Peng Cheng Cloud Brain III's record-setting IO500 result, Huawei OceanStor A800 storage was deployed to connect to 664 compute nodes. The system was evaluated under demanding conditions, using 79,680 parallel processes, and passed 13 test cases spanning multiple scenarios. It achieved an overall score of 603,334.58, with 8,291.11 GiB/s bandwidth and 43,903,983.64 kIOP/s metadata performance. These results earned the system the number one ranking on both the Research List and the Full List, demonstrating the exceptional performance and stability of Huawei OceanStor A800 storage at extreme scale.
With the innovative data-control plane separation architecture, Huawei OceanStor A800 storage directly transfers data from DPUs to SSDs, implementing I/O passthrough. It also uses the DataTurbo high-performance file acceleration engine and an intelligent multi-level cache replacement policy to increase metadata OPS for massive small files. In addition, the storage system supports both scale-out and scale-up capabilities, delivering hundreds of TB/s aggregate bandwidth while supporting EB-level capacity expansion. This enables the smooth evolution of large-scale compute clusters in supercomputing and AI computing scenarios.
Huawei Data Storage's excellent performance in the IO500 rankings demonstrates its technical expertise and ongoing innovation in the storage field. Moving forward, Huawei Data Storage will continue to be a pioneer in the supercomputing and AI computing fields, breaking previous performance limitations, unleashing data potential, and providing customers with enhanced data services.
